The Story of Stuff

Hey there everyone. If you're reading this. Thank you for taking the time to look at this video besides looking at the Story your peers have written.

This video is connected to the next class we are having this coming week. It's about civilizations and the impact they have on the world we live in today.

I'd like you to watch it and tell me what you think. I will be showing it again next week when we have class together but I was hoping that you'd get a head start into thinking about whether our Civilizations are really civilized.

Think about what makes a civilization civilized. What does a civilized society do Socially, Technologically, Morally, Religiously and Environmentally? These are all questions we should ask ourselves as a community of people living together.

  1. Very interesting. Definitely an eye-opener. So it's saying that our civilisation now depends on consumerism?

Yet there are lots of people who don't agree debating on youtube.

  2. I like this video so much cause myself is a supporter of 'save the earth'.For me to reach a true civilization,it's not just about human, environment also plays a very important role that could influence people's thinking.Because i believe that good environment develops good thoughts, therefore i think that harmony between human and the environment should be maintain in order to achieve civilization.

  3. i agree with on what keith said today the cost of civilization is on someones blood. I still remember in the movie 2012 when the earth was going to end the rich and influential people were building arks or space ships to save themselves but these ships were built by the local chinese community in china..as the present generation we need to fight for environment rights human justice and ect if we just dont bother we might be hitting doomsday..those who fail to remember the past are condemm to repeat it again

  5. Yeah Darren. Its seems like we always want something new. That's because we are brought up to believe that this is normal but the reality is it isn't.

Jon: 2012 is a great example of that. You can still see inequality even in the movie. So it ends up that only the rich people are saved. That's the reality of it isn't it? The question we should ask ourselves is how do we become more equitable. That means how can we be more fair.

Xin Yi: do you agree with everything in the video? Tell me what you think. I'm interested to know.

  6. the definition that i find in dictionary for the word "civilization" is a relatively high level of cultural and technological development.
Do we really civilized??? do civilization will ever be achieved before the world ends? For me, humans desire of wanting more satisfaction form this world are leading us to the end of the world sooner... history repeats no matter what. no matter how much we know about and study about history to make sure that we are not repeating the same thing, try to look back, actually we are repeating it in just a different way. the more advance we are in the technology or culture.. one planet earth is definitely not enough for us to do "experiment" in order to achieve civilization.

  7. A real eye opener... makes me angry though that ALOT of the world don't know anything about this or are just plain ignorant towards it!

  8. I don't agree entirely. If everyone decides that their old stuff is good enough then there would be less demand for better products with higher and more innovative technology. If everyone were contented with the mp3 player that they had, I'm not sure if Steve Jobs would be so successful now. Without demand for innovation how would the society improve?

  9. This video is really interesting for me..and especially the part when people keep buying stuff and eventually throw their things away..and this cause more trash and the materials keep flowing non-stop for the consumers to consume..but unfortunately most of the people don't even bother about this and they do still continue to shop..

  11. If the whole cycle could be ended with an environmental friendly and toxin-free disposal ways or producing more and more biodegradable products with affordable prices for the nation, then the civilization is successful^^
However, it doesn't have a happy ending for this cycle, thus we will be suffering in the future, either the future generations..In my point of view, it's all because of $!! If the private sector(producers) dont emphasize on profit but environment as priority, then we consumers will choose the environmentally friendly products and thus the garbage will be disposed in an effective way.

  12. keith u asked me a very good question personally i feel that there are many reasons how we can become fair such as we always have alternatives not to exploit the resources of the earth, treat people equally regardless of race religion and class, fight and uphold our rigts and ect but i am sorry to say keith the human race have come to a unchangeable stage..all this messages of love fairness and equality are flattery words than is created to give a fake hope that will convince the community that the rich and powerful "care" about us when actually they are deceiving plans to make more millions and billions..money is the root of all evil as they ruthlessly treat the environment and the weaker people in the society in the name of civilization..high robbery rates in the world are due to shortage of food and ect..people began to do unwanted things to jst survive.. in poor countries they even sell their organs or human trafficking to earn a living.. a godless generation..i think only God can shake the pride of man and open his eyes..

  14. Well said Darren. It's a very good question isn't it? What happens to all our waste?

Xin Yi: you have highlighted the fundamental problem in our world. On one hand we need to progress and improve. On the other we use tons of resources at an alarming rate. Something's got to compromise its self. Either we compromise the lives and rights of others and the environment to achieve these goals or we find alternatives in technology which are sustainable so that it is more open and available to anyone. It's a big dilemma for many successful big businesses.
