Hi All,
Here's another installment for our blogs!! Some of you have seen this powerful video in class already, but I would love to further discuss it's effect on us throughout this week as well.
I have a few questions that might help direct our discussions as we go along.
1) What do you think about the portrayal of the video?
2) How do you feel about it's message? Are you surprised that this kind of thing still happens
today? Why?
3) The issue we talked about in class was about how basic human rights and workers rights were slowly formulated and championed by people in the Victorian era i.e. people like Charles
Dickens. How do you think we can be part of ending this problem in our era?
when i saw this video,i felt the kids are unfortunate and i felt sad because nowaday children are spoil by their parent, they get what they wants easily, where the kids(in the video) have to work for the whole day only get their paid.besides that,i would not surprise that this kind of thing will still happen today because, the backward country are the most popular places where they abandon or selling kids to the agent for money and agent will bring them to work in a factory or work as prostitution.
ReplyDeleteeach kid live a normal life... just its how they spend their day doing or spend their day with...
ReplyDeleteWell, it is really sad to see the difference between the two kids and to imagine that this is still going on in this era. Watching this video made me realise that we're so fortunate to have a normal life and normal childhood unlike the poor kid spending his childhood in some shoe blacking factory everyday. So, I think that we should be thankful for what we have now. While for the ways to end this problem in this era, I think that the government and the law play a vital part. However, we as part of the society should at least contribute a bit to help the needy. We can at least report any cases of peoplw mistreating kids to the authorities or perhaps we can volunteer ourselves to help the unfortunate kids such as donating anything to the homes or giving them moral support. Our slightest help may be the beginning of their brightest hope.
ReplyDeleteWell, I'd definitely have to agree with min_hong_choon92..Yea, we have to b grateful how lucky we are to have hot food, warm clothing and a roof over our head. But feeling lucky and grateful won't help the thousands of helpless children trapped in dirty factories slaving over shoes, clothes and other items. What i want to know, is how can we stop this?..Its an atrocity and something needs to be done about it. One person can't make much of a difference, but if more people became aware of this we could do something. Sure, there's people out there trying to stop this, but its on a global scale...What can we do?
ReplyDeleteI was not suprised at all by the portrayal in the video. Coming from one of the poorest countries in the world, it's something I see on a daily basis back at home. I think it really is something that should be discussed and I definately feel children and adults in the first world need to be made aware of this desperate situation and how they play a role in this situation continuing. I am not suprised that this still happens because I don't believe there is a fair way of living. We are all taught to try to get as much out of any given situation for as little as possible. It's the way we do business. There have to be losers and winners and children in the third world unfortunately are paying for that. How do we change this situation when we are taught in class that the third world is the best place to manufacture products because of cheap labour? The feeling towards this sad situation should extend past being apalled. People are apalled all the time, how will that help the 11year old in a slum that works 11 hours a day? I think we can change by really making everyone accountable for the way they do business and the leaders of the countries that watch these atrocities committed against their people. Make laws against exploitation, make ILO really do their job and protect workers rights and trully think about giving aid to the third world to develop.
ReplyDeletethis video tell us how lucky we are and we should appreciate it. I'm not surprise that this kind of thing still happen around us cause i read these issue before and i really think the human rights or worker rights should be protected for the poor kids. These rules should be more strict and a very heavy punishment should be made to those who disobey or break the rules. Corrupted government is also one of the reason that human trafficking is still happening nowadays. With this kind of government running the country, this issue will never be solved. Another way for us to help is donation and education. When people have a healthy and positive mind, they will know that this is not the right way and they will start to support the poor and pull the corrupted government down
ReplyDeleteI suppose most people who feel for the young boy see the terrible conditions and helpless life and think that the first thing they should do is give money. But What interesting is the tag line at the end " some things are cost more than we realize" which forces us to look at some very difficult issues like:
ReplyDeleteAre we doing business fairly?
Do people in these countries, even in our country have equal rights?
What is the true role of the government?
These are all questions that Charles Dickens asked through his books. Even though they were children's books most of them addressed children's rights and social problems of that time.
Guru Keith's Questions do kind of make you realise that evil corporations do exploit children as young as 3..Their only goal is to maximize profit and minimize cost, in this case the cost is children...
ReplyDeleteNo, these children do not have any say in how they live, working conditions or wages..Such a situation can be seen in Charles Dickens book, Oliver Twist, when he asks one of the masters for more soup and get hit with the big, iron ladle...
Well, most Govt's are corrupt to the core and turn the other cheek when it comes to these issues cos' their paid off. I thought the Govt. was established to protect and support its society..Talk about hypocrisy..& Charles Dickens did address this in his books, which helps to open peoples eyes to these hidden issues...Hallelujah for Charles Dickens..lol
I guess this is an issue that the public has to be aware about before anything can be done to solve the problem. As discussed in class, this is a global issue, and cannot be solved by only a few people. What we can do now is support fair trade.
ReplyDeletesomething cost more then you think~ in this vid, kids labor ~> productions ~> consumers (us)
ReplyDeletein 1800s the industrial development in Victorian Era, they are intensively used kids as labor. where kids lost their rights. they din have a normal kids life like now. and the normally died before the age of 20 because of the environment.
in 2000s labors from other countries came to M'sia working and became a refugees. they lost their either, they were forced to leave their own country.. imagine that you one day.. you lost a place call "home".. what would it be?
both of this shares the same similarities.. they are not treated well... they lost their rights for being a human beings..
do we have a solutions for that? most probably not~ because there are only a very very minor ppl in this earth that actually cares about how should we (the luckier one) should help them.. this world now is manipulated by a bunch of creatures that is SELFISH... this world will end before the world started to take a huge steps for solutions.
Child labor is inhumane occupation. People behind the business just think about profit and profit, and neglect the children right. While children at their age actually need education to develop their potential and ability.
ReplyDeleteI'm kinda surprised to find this fact that child labor becomes culture in business life, because people who are involved in business should be educated people, so they should know how essential education is for children. And also if this children are treated inhumanely, it can give bad impacts for their mentality.
Government in every country should implement strict rule so child labor can be stopped. Moreover, the unemployment rate is high. This kind of people can replace children to do the work. However, money can't buy children happiness and freedom.
I like his graphs. Never seen anything like that before. What a cool nerd. :)
ReplyDeleteCool right? and here's the thing. You're thinking how is this useful. I'd say it the most useful thing. It's better than giving people money. It's because it's giving people information and knowledge which will then become useful in solving problems. I love the one where it shows all the pictures of an average home based on how much people earn. If you remember I told you all that the average amount people in the world earn every day is US$2 and the guy's showing what kinda house people live in from US$1 a day to somewhere higher us and the difference is so drastic it's carzy.
ReplyDeletestart wondering what we can do to contribute in this poverty thinggy...
ReplyDeletewell i m not shock that these things still happen today. Guru Keith i come from Negeri Sembilan. Early this year there were some Sabahan teenagers attending my church. Most of them were girls age 14-17. First of all none of them are schooling. 2nd they were brought to my hometown as factory workers by agents like how foreign workers are brought in when Sabahans are considered Malaysians. There were all cheated by the factory and treated worst than foreign workers. Last, two of them were already having their second child. I strongly think that its our responsibility to fight for the rights of the less fortunate. we must seek justice and bring this matters up to our leaders. but sadly no action is taken by them. in my hometown many non governmental organizations adopt these kids and teach them how to read and write and provide education for them. we believe that education is the only way poverty can be broken. this video potrays a good message the more high-tech a society is the less civilize we are as the moral values in us decay. well i am thankful for being brought up in a wonderful family but my heart breaks as I see the UNJUSTICE around me.
